Meet the Second Grade Teachers

Stacy Kelly

I began my college career, not with the Mrs. Kellyhopes of becoming an educator, but with the desire to become a computer accountant.  It took only a few semesters for me to realize that crunching numbers and sitting in front of a computer were not my cups of tea.  With some encouragement from friends, I began taking education classes.  It was during that time I became hooked on teaching .I graduated from Villa Julie College with an Elementary Education degree in December of 1995, and in the spring of 1996 I was hired as a long term substitute for a second grade classroom here at TES.  I was thrilled to be brought on as a full time teacher by the end of that school year.

Second grade is where I stayed until I received my graduate degree in Reading Education from Towson University.  I spent two years  working as Timonium’s reading specialist, servicing children in kindergarten, first, second, and fifth grades.  I enjoyed the chance to work with many TES students, and I learned a great deal about reading instruction while holding that position, but I missed the classroom atmosphere and teaching multiple subjects.  It was back to second grade for me!

I am incredibly fortunate to have spent my entire teaching career at such a wonderful elementary school.  The teachers/staff and TES families are dedicated to making learning a number one priority for all children.

Betty McCue

Mrs. McCueMy love for teaching began when I was a teenager in high school. Then I was teaching younger children to ride and I knew that I would continue to be some kind of educator.  I grew up on a farm in Virginia and graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Elementary Education. In Virginia, I taught kindergarten, first grade, and second grade. After moving to Maryland, I was fortunate enough to be hired by Baltimore County. I taught at Winand Elementary School, then Fifth District Elementary School, and finally here at Timonium Elementary School.

When I came to Timonium Elementary School in 2001, I found myself surrounded by the most committed people. The staff is outstanding and dedicated to the growth of the students. I am fortunate to be part of the second grade team.

Cheryl Barry

I was born and raised in California Mrs. Barryand I came to Maryland by way of Portland, Oregon where my two children were born. I graduated from San Jose State University with a BA in Journalism and I worked in advertising for 11 years before my move to the east coast. I began teaching in 2003 and I received my Master's in Education Leadership from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland in 2010 and a Master’s degree in Reading Education at Towson University in 2016.

I’m an avid walker. I also enjoy reading, watching sports, and traveling with my friends.

As a second grade teacher, I am blessed to help young children develop a love of reading and writing. It is truly amazing to watch them grow into confident thinkers and responsible and respectful young citizens.  I look forward to working with your children and watching them blossom this year.

Laura Kovatch

Ms. KovatchI grew up in York, Pennsylvania and went to Penn State University. I am a college football fan at heart but will always support the Ravens on any given Sunday. I started my teaching career in Northern Virginia where I taught first grade in Prince William County. I missed home and decided to move back to Pennsylvania. I began teaching 4th grade at Pot Spring Elementary as a long-term substitute. From there, I was hired at Fort Garrison Elementary where I have been for the past 5 years, two in 4th grade and three in 2nd grade. I have a strong passion for teaching reading and helping students succeed! I am excited to embark on my new journey as a Timonium Dolphin and become part of the amazing school family and community.
